The scientific term for nearsightedness is myopia. You can see clearly up close, but everything in the distance is blurry. This is because your eye is too long, causing light rays to land in the wrong place.
Between the ages of 6 and 17, the eye elongates most rapidly, meaning increasingly stronger glasses are required. However, an elongated eye results not only in a higher prescription but—later in life—primarily in an increased risk of eye conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and cataracts. Myopia is even expected to become the leading cause of blindness within a few years. This makes it all the more important to curb the elongation of the eye as effectively as possible.
Many factors influence eye development. That is why it is best for your child to follow the 20-20-2 rule. The most important thing is to look at something in the distance for 20 seconds after every 20 minutes of close-up work. The ‘2’ stands for spending two hours a day outdoors.
Furthermore, various treatments are available to slow down the growth of the eye. Unfortunately, this cannot be achieved with standard spectacle lenses; while they do improve vision, they do not counteract the stimuli that cause the eye to elongate, meaning the eye continues to grow.
Options that are available include contact lenses, atropine drops, and now special spectacle lenses as well. For instance, Essilor has released the Stellest lens. At New Optics, we choose to work with Hoya Miyosmart lenses. The front surface of these lenses features approximately 400 nearly invisible defocus lenslets, while the center provides distance correction. This means your child enjoys clear distance vision while simultaneously receiving treatment for myopia. In other words, Miyosmart lenses offer a child-friendly, safe, and convenient treatment for myopia.
Naturally, any treatment is initiated only in consultation with an ophthalmologist. While results may vary from child to child, slowing the growth of the eye is always a benefit for later in life!
